Tonight I was craving San Antonio's Alamo Cafe food - specifically their fresh tortillas and queso.
Josh and I went to the Kingwood HEB to try to find fresh tortillas - no success. Luckily, the next HEB we went to had one last package! We attempted to make queso.
Using:
- Shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- Velveeta
- Heavy cream
- Serrano pepper
- Jalapeno
- Can of diced tomatoes with green chiles
- Chili powder
- Cilantro
We came up with a pretty good result - a bit of the spicy side, so next time we'll use less jalapeno. However, with the fresh tortillas (fresh being mandatory), this satisfied my craving.
But I never said it was healthy!
So this is the first full week of being knowingly pregnant! Even if there had not been positive tests (at our house and the doctor's office), it would be pretty blatant to ignore.
This week the baby's heart should be starting to beat. Josh and I have an ultrasound set for the beginning of March, but may not be able to hear the heartbeat then, if the baby has not moved forward enough.
We had the first pre-natal visit on Friday. My current due date, as suspected from the numerous online Due Date Calculators, is currently 29 September 2008 (which means here comes a future Aggie, class of 2030!). I think Josh could not have been more bored. We are both surprised about how many eating restrictions there are for pregnant women - I had known about the obvious things like eating too much fish, drinking alcohol or consuming too much caffeine. I cannot eat lunch meat because of listeria - that makes hiding the pregnancy a bit more difficult at work, where boxed lunches are often served at all day meetings.
I have noticed more differences this week. I've been feeling nauseous for almost three weeks now, but it has definitely had many more ups-and-downs this week. On Friday night, going to the grocery store with Josh was definitely not fun. I now need to avoid all areas with smelly items like candles or various types of food. Once we got home, I could not even unload the grocery items - I felt like there was nothing I could do but lie down. The fatigue is definitely starting to set in.
The cravings are also starting. I cannot eat vegetables, or else I feel like I will vomit. The only food I can keep down tends to be loaded down with carbs - so hopefully this will end soon. One thing that was interesting - I craved ice cream on the days that I did not drink whole milk - I guess, in a strange way, the cravings really are based on what my body needs - just haven't figured out how french fries play into that!
Today was the first time I've really exercised since finding out I was pregnant. Supposedly the best thing to do if you haven't been working out is go on long walks... something that is also good for maintenance of canine sanity (and recovery of Sadie's leg). I actually noticed an accelerated heartbeat and increased exhaustion from me. Poor Josh had to pick up Sadie for part of the walk... hopefully she will continue to recover well.
